The Council’s Planning Committee will later this month consider a proposal to launch a consultation on a draft Development Brief for residential space on land at Moredon Recreation Ground.

The Recreation Ground is owned by the Council and currently provides football, cricket and croquet provision.

Plans for the sports hub include a closed cycling road circuit, BMX track, BMX pump track, Cyclo-cross, 3G pitch and enhanced football, croquet and cricket provision, while also providing new changing rooms and a new sports pavilion.

Sports England, British Cycling and the Football Foundation are supporting the sports hub investment, which is subject to being granted planning approval. The plans are due to be submitted for consideration shortly.

The draft Brief for the residential development contains provision for the erection of high quality homes adjacent to the sports hub. It is hoped that the secluded housing development will be attractive to a wide demographic including families, young professionals and retired people.

The layout will be designed to encourage walking and cycling, with quality of place at its heart.

Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate and Customer Services, said: “This is a very exciting project, and if permission is granted to launch the public consultation, we will be keen to get feedback from as many people as possible.

“This Council is committed to ensuring that Swindon has plenty of fantastic sporting facilities and quality housing developments, and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with preparing this Development Brief.”

Ward Members and parish councillors have been consulted on the production of the Development Brief and plans were displayed at an informal public consultation event held at a Moredon Community Centre on 26 July 2018.

If approved, the Brief will act as development management guidance and will be used to assist in any negotiations between the Council and applicants on any future proposal for the site.

The Council’s Planning Committee will meet on Tuesday, 14 August 2018.
