Tenants invited to celebrate 100 years of council housing
Council tenants will gather at an event to celebrate both the centenary and the future of council housing at the Civic Offices this week.
Published: Monday, 28th October 2019
Known as ‘Housing 100’, the event will be held from 1pm until 3pm on Wednesday (30 October) to take a look back at the last 100 years of council housing.
Photos and artefacts will be on display to showcase the history of housing, inviting tenants to take a step back in time and see how major developments have progressed into what they are today.
There will also be the chance to speak to teams from across the Council including those involved with future housing developments and the Homeline team who assist vulnerable people in their homes.
Representatives from the Institute of Housing and Swindon’s Heritage Action Zone will be among those who will join the celebrations.
The event will be officially opened by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Garry Perkins, who will present housing apprentices with their awards.
Councillor Cathy Martyn, Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Safety, said: “The Housing 100 event will showcase the wonderful work which our Housing department does to support our tenants.
“It’s also a great opportunity for tenants to learn more about the journey which council housing has been on over the last 100 years as well as a look ahead at future housing projects.”
