Eighteen locations will benefit from the essential resurfacing before the end of March, including some roads and junctions which are used by thousands of motorists a day such as the westbound section of Thamesdown Drive between Cricklade Road and the Orbital shopping centre, and Great Western Way’s Blagrove Roundabout.

Due to the nature of the work, there is likely to be some disruption to motorists with the Council’s Highways team utilising some day (7.30am to 6pm) or overnight (7pm to 6am) closures.

The locations being resurfaced include:

  • New Road, Chiseldon - ongoing traffic management until 17 January
  • Pinehurst Road - ongoing day closures until 17 January
  • New Road, Chiseldon - day closures from 20 to 25 January
  • Newport Street - day closures from 27 to 29 January
  • Croft Road - day closures from 30 January to 4 February
  • Durnham Street (between Victoria Road and Queens Park) - day closure on 7 February
  • Cricklade Road (between Kembrey Street and Menham Close) - day closure on 10 February
  • St Philips Road (between Beechcroft Road and Farrfield) - day closure on 11 February
  • Shrivenham Road - day closure on 12 February
  • The Street, Castle Eaton Bridge - day closure on 13 February
  • A420 at Acorn Bridge - night closure on the 13 February
  • Blagrove Roundabout - night closures from 14 to 18 February
  • Great Western Way (between Meads and Mannington roundabout) - night closures from 19 to 21 February
  • Thamesdown Drive (westbound between Cricklade Road and Orbital Shopping Centre) - night closures from 21 to 28 February
  • Cricklade Road (southbound between Thamesdown Drive and Arkwright Road) - night closures from 28 February to 4 March
  • Great Western Hospital access road - night closures from 4 to 12 March
  • Queens Drive Roundabout - night closures from 12 March to 20 March
  • Drakes Way - night closures from 20 to 27 March

Access will be maintained for local businesses and residents and diversions will be in place for other motorists where necessary.

All the work should be finished by 27 March but is subject to weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Limited resources mean that in 2024/25 the Council is spending just over £2m on proactive road resurfacing work.

The Council also set aside an additional £2m for day-to-day highways maintenance, including reactive pothole repairs (£170,000) but also all other maintenance work related to roads, pavements and cycle paths. An additional £1.5m has been awarded to the Council from central government to help with road repairs for the next financial year.

Residents and motorists are advised to check the Council’s website for full details and up-to-date information.

Councillor Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “In order to build a better Swindon and help keep drivers moving, we need to make sure that our roads are in the best condition they can be with our limited resources.

“I know these works may be an inconvenience to some motorists but it must happen to ensure our roads can be used for many years to come.

“We’ll be undertaking more work to improve road surfaces throughout the year, but I’m glad we can get out of the blocks quickly in 2025 and start doing this important maintenance.

"I'm really pleased we'll be receiving the extra £1.5m from central government and this will go a long way to help plan more effectively the work moving forwards.

“I’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience and support while this work is carried out.”
