Views sought for new car parking standards

Swindon Borough Council is seeking the views of members of the public as it seeks to update its Parking Standards document

Published: Friday, 21st September 2018

People are being asked to complete a short questionnaire relating to travel patterns that will help officers understand the town’s car parking needs.

The existing Parking Standards document dates from 2007 and the Council is taking the opportunity to review and update it. This is necessary to ensure that car parking provision across Swindon in general, and for new developments in particular, is fit for purpose.

Councillor Gary Sumner, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, said: “It is vitally important to find the right balance between the need to keep parked cars off the road and the need for people to have safe places to park.

“The new Parking Standards document will attempt to find that balance and I would encourage everybody to take part in the questionnaire, which will help our officers to ensure the new document is the best it can be.”

The Council requires all new developments – from house extensions to new residential estates, shopping centres and offices – to make adequate provision for car parking, so that parking on the highway is avoided.

The questionnaire will be available to complete until 5pm on Saturday, October 20 2018.
