The two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows are under construction in Ventnor Close on an unused plot of land owned by Swindon Borough Council.
As part of the development, the Council is improving the road layout of Ventnor Close and has already created a new car park for local residents close to where the new properties are being built.
Rigg Construction is building the bungalows on behalf of the Council, which will be let via the Council’s Housing register and allocated to families or individuals with complex physical health needs, who require a property that is fully adapted and can meet their needs both now and in the future.
Built with timber frames, all the homes will be ‘A’ rated with energy efficient measures such as air source heat pumps, solar panels and mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems (MVHR).
Earlier this month, work began on three adapted bungalows in Ashley Close, Walcot which will also be let on the Council’s housing register to tenants who need them.
Councillor Janine Howarth, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “This type of accommodation is in short supply in Swindon and it is absolutely wonderful that work is underway to build these 11 adapted homes, which will transform the lives of the individuals and families who need them.
“Like the three properties in Ashley Close, the eight bungalows in Ventnor Close will be wheelchair accessible and feature a number of adaptations, while also having the latest energy-saving technology ensuring they are both kinder to the environment and our tenants’ finances.
“The scheme will also deliver improvements to people who already live in Ventnor Close as we will be improving the road layout in the area and local parking provision. This is exactly the sort of project which delivers on our missions to Build a Fairer, Better and Greener Swindon and I look forward to seeing it come to life over the next 12 months.”
