Legal intervention

Attendance legal intervention applies only to children of compulsory school age and is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Forms of legal intervention

Legal intervention may include:

  • attendance contracts
  • attendance prosecution
  • education supervision orders
  • parenting orders
  • penalty notices

Parents and schools are encouraged to work together to address attendance concerns. Legal intervention is used when appropriate, such as for:

  • cases where parents are not engaging with available support
  • term-time leave requests

Notice to improve

In some situations, a notice to improve letter may be issued to parents before legal intervention is considered. This letter outlines the need for immediate improvements in attendance.
