Swindon Virtual School

Swindon Virtual School
Supporting the education of looked-after children

The Virtual School works in partnership with the child or young person’s school or educational setting to ensure they are supported to fulfil their potential at every stage of their education. This partnership helps provide the best opportunities for success in their adult lives.

While looked-after children attend schools and settings across Swindon and other local authorities, the Virtual School monitors their attendance, attainment and achievement, ensuring their educational success is prioritised in care planning.

Looked-after children attract additional funding, known as Pupil Premium Plus, which is designed to support the targets and outcomes outlined in their Personal Education Plans (PEPs). This funding is administered by the Headteacher of the Virtual School.

Supporting the education of children in care and care leavers

The Virtual School Head ensures looked-after children have access to quality education by monitoring progress, managing Pupil Premium funding and supporting school placements. By prioritising their educational needs through targeted funding and care planning, the Virtual School helps them achieve their potential.

Regular reviews: Stakeholders meet to review the child’s progress, update Personal Education Plans (PEPs) and agree on next steps.

Information sharing: Professionals share updates to ensure everyone understands the child’s needs and challenges.

Tailored interventions: Targeted support, like tutoring or mental health services, addresses barriers to learning.

This collaborative approach ensures children in care receive the support needed to reach their full potential.
