Step 2: Other housing options

There is a shortage of council housing in Swindon and a huge demand for accommodation. This means properties are not generally available and usually only go to those who are in the most need. It can take years to be rehoused.

The following options may provide an alternative to applying for council housing.

Private renting

Finding a home that you can afford to rent does not have to mean finding a council or housing association property. There are other properties in Swindon that are available to rent from a private landlord. You can apply to the private rental agencies in the area for suitable accommodation. You may be eligible for help with paying your rent by claiming for Housing Benefit or Universal Credit.

Mutual exchanges

If you are a tenant and want to exchange your home, you can only do this with the consent of your current landlord.

Find further information on exchanging your council home.

Home Swapper

Home Swapper is a free mutual exchange system for council housing tenants who wish to swap their homes. Some housing associations may also be registered to Home Swapper or operate a separate exchange system.

Visit the Home Swapper website or speak to your landlord directly for more information.
