Why we have CCTV cameras
- to help detect crime by providing evidence
- to help prevent and reduce crime by providing a deterrent for anti-social behaviour and public disorder
- to help police capture people suspected of committing a crime
- to help identify witnesses of suspected crimes
Compliance and privacy
We follow government guidelines for using CCTV.
We have submitted a privacy impact assessment to the Surveillance Camera Commissioner, which ensures we are taking people's privacy into account in our use of CCTV.
Request footage
You have the right to ask for CCTV footage of yourself. However, most CCTV footage is deleted 30 days after it’s recorded.
How to apply
If the CCTV footage relates to a crime and its subsequent investigation, the police will have to request the footage. They will tell you if you are able to view it.
To access footage of yourself for personal reasons, make a formal request to our data protection officer by email dataprotection@swindon.gov.uk.
