CAMHS: Accessing the service

Next steps to getting help

Support for children, young people and families (CYPF) who would benefit from extensive long-term evidence-based treatment, including inpatient care and outpatient provision.

Support for CYPF where support from services in ‘getting help’ hasn’t helped to resolve the difficulties or where these difficulties have got worse.

CAMHS offer a variety of evidence-based interventions including:

  • family therapy
  • cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT)
  • psychotherapy
  • medication
  • parenting support
  • distress tolerance
  • healthy habits

These are provided by a range of individuals from different professional backgrounds.

We provide interventions that can be 1:1 or can involve the family/network around a young person.

We are a community-based service so offer appointments across a wide range of venues including within the clinic, at schools, GP surgeries and in people’s homes. We always try to work with the young person and family to find the best place to have appointments.

All young people accessing CAMHS will have a full psychosocial mental health assessment including an assessment of risk. This helps us to think with the young person and their family about what intervention may be the most suitable to meet the needs they have identified.

CAMHS also offer specialist clinics to support children and young people with specific difficulties relating to neurodevelopmental disorders and eating disorders.

Neurodevelopmental clinic

CAMHS have a Neurodevelopmental clinic which provides assessment and diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders for young people with complex needs who have additional mental health needs.

Neurodevelopmental conditions

We also attend the Complex Case Clinic at GWH.

The Eating Disorder Service (TEDS)

TEDS provides assessment and evidence-based treatment on eating disorders such as CBT-E and Multi-family Therapy.

Young People living in Swindon can be referred by calling the Swindon clinic on 01865 903422.
