Developmental language disorder (DLD)

DLD advice for parents

If your child has been diagnosed with DLD you may feel worried, and anxious about it and that is ok. Children and adults with DLD can do well and thrive

How to help

  • Keep language simple and give instructions one step at a time
  • Repeat language and actions. The more times words are heard and repeated in everyday conversation, the more likely it is that words will be understood and used by your child.
  • Use words that are easy to understand and use these in short sentences
  • Show your child what you want them to do. Comment and talk about what you are doing so that language is heard along with the action or the demonstration of an activity.
  • Share activities such as:
    • baking together
    • playing games
    • being outside: walking, exploring
    • reading and talking about books
    • asking about what helps
