Carer's assessment
A carer’s assessment is an informal discussion about the impact that caring for someone has on your life. It can reveal a lot to you about how your life is affected by caring and what can be done to support you.
It isn’t a test of your ability to provide care and you don’t need the permission of the person you’re caring for.
Benefits include:
- Emotional and practical support
- Signposting to relevant services and carer groups
- Access to a carers emergency card
- Possible access to a carer's direct payment
- Receive information specific to your circumstances and a regular newsletter
Check if you can get a carer’s assessment
You can get a carer’s assessment if:
- you’re aged 18 or over
- you live in Swindon and care or plan to care for an adult
You don’t have to be the adult’s only carer to get a carer’s assessment.
There is no charge for a carer’s assessment.
You can ask for an assessment even if the person you’re caring for doesn’t get any services from us. If the person you’re caring for wants an assessment about their support needs, the carer’s assessment can happen at the same time (if the person you care for agrees).
Requesting a carer’s assessment
If the person you’re caring for receives services from us, you can ask their social worker about arranging a carer’s assessment.
If the person you’re caring for doesn’t receive services from us, you can arrange a carer’s assessment through Swindon Carers Centre. You can complete a quick online form or contact them by phone or email.
