Day centres and day care
Day centres are often run by local community and voluntary organisations. They offer a range of activities, a chance to socialise and a hot meal.
Day care is for people who need some help with personal or practical care and are unable to get out and about by themselves. It offers more support than an ordinary day centre.
Day centres
Day centres provide a range of activities, a chance to socialise and meet friends and a hot meal for people over 65.
They are usually open all day and staff and volunteers organise different activities to suit and entertain the people who go there. These can include:
- board games
- bingo
- guest speakers
- crafts
- performances
- exercise classes
- day trips
Light snacks are provided in the morning and afternoon and a hot meal at lunchtime.

Cost
Day centres don’t aim to make a profit. In addition to the cost of any meals provided, many charge a small amount for coffee and tea. They may also hold raffles to help out with the cost of entertainment, parties, or special occasions during the year.
Day care
Day care is usually available in a resource centre, community building or a residential home, where professional staff can:
- make sure you’re comfortable
- support you with personal care, such as going to the toilet, washing or bathing
- remind you to take medication
You may be able to have a hot meal and drinks during the day. You can also socialise and take part in a leisure and craft activities.
Eligibility for day care
You need to be over 18, living in Swindon and eligible for help. We would need to arrange an assessment of your care and support needs.
