Staying steady and preventing falls

Falls can occur for many, or a combination of, different reasons but are not an inevitable part of ageing. There are lots of steps you can take to help reduce the chance of a fall happening for you, or someone you care for.

Some of these steps are simple actions you can make yourself.

If you do experience a fall it's important to talk to your GP or a Health Professional. They will help to identify potential causes and ensure you receive appropriate care.

Keeping safe, healthy and independent will help you enjoy life and make the most of it. Taking action can reduce your chances of falling again and help you overcome any worries you might have about being on your feet.

Tips for preventing falls at home include:

  • using non-slip mats and rugs
  • removing clutter, trailing wires and any frayed carpets
  • organising your home so that you do less climbing, stretching and bending
  • wearing well-fitting shoes with a stable base, supportive heel and secure fixing
  • taking care of your feet by trimming toenails regularly, or seeing a foot care practitioner
  • eating and drinking well

You may also consider equipment to help you at home.

Activity

Staying active is important throughout life, but it is especially important as we get older. Muscle weakness, being less flexible and poor balance all affect our walking and make us more likely to fall. Between the ages of 50 and 70 it's natural to experience a decline of about 30% in muscle strength, our balance reactions also slow down making it harder to stay steady.

Specialist strength and balance exercise groups for older people are a good way to meet new friends while also helping to take care of your health.

Medication review and sight tests

Depending on your circumstances, your GP will generally review your medication every year.

It is important to consider the side effects of any medication you are taking and whether this could cause or increase risk of falls.

It is also important to get your eyes tested regularly as eyesight problems can often be easily treated.
