Foster carer and connected carer training

Post-approval training

When you are approved, the fostering service will provide you with a wide range of professional courses. These courses will enable you to improve your knowledge and understanding of caring for children who have experienced trauma. This will ensure they thrive in your care.

Our foster carers complete all the following courses within their first two years of fostering:

  • Allegations, complaints, standards of care and safe caring*
  • Child development (online)
  • Education for children looked after
  • Health for children looked after
  • Life story work (online)
  • Managing challenging behaviour (online)
  • PACE*
  • Paediatric first aid*
  • Recording, presenting and information sharing
  • Working with birth families and managing family time
  • Training, support and development standards 1-7

* To be refreshed every three years.

Your supervising social worker will also help you identify future training needs.
