Responsibility for how your home is managed

Under the Housing Act 1994, housing tenants have the Right to Manage. This means you and other tenants can take over responsibility for managing housing services by forming a Tenant Management Organisation and following the Right to Manage process.

Alternatively, you can ask SBC Housing to enter a voluntary local management agreement to take on certain housing services with landlord consent.

To do this, you will need to:

  • work with other tenants to decide which services and homes you want to manage
  • engage with residents to secure support for your plans
  • demonstrate competence in managing housing services

The Right to Manage is a statutory right, meaning landlord consent is not required, nor is any court order. However, voluntary management agreements do require landlord approval.
