Smart meters

Residents across Swindon are being offered the opportunity to upgrade their existing gas and electricity meters to a smart meter by their energy supplier, as part of a nationwide scheme. 

This is free of charge and you can ask for one now.

There are many advantages to having a smart meter fitted:

• They come with an in-home display that shows you exactly how much energy you're using in pounds and pence, in near real time
• You can wave goodbye to estimated billing, so you will receive accurate bills
• They can work in either prepayment mode or credit mode
• Prepayment smart meters have more flexible top-up options, including via apps and on-line
• They can allow you to access cheaper time of use tariffs

Smart meters are the foundation to a smarter energy system. 

With the information they offer, they will help to integrate renewable power, such as wind, solar and hydro power, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. 

By decarbonising the energy system, it will dramatically reduce the nation’s carbon footprint as a whole.
