Kimmerfields regeneration scheme
Creating a cultural quarter in Swindon
Working with local arts and cultural groups, we are looking to develop a Cultural Quarter in Swindon on part of the 20-acre former industrial site next to Fleming Way, known as Kimmerfields.
This is a long-term ambition over the next decade, engaging with external funders and the commercial sector to bring forward investment and specific proposals that could see:
- a new 1,200-seat theatre - twice the size of the current Wyvern Theatre and able to receive the very best touring theatrical and musical productions
- a new dance studio, media and arts production centre and art pavilion to display Swindon’s nationally-significant art collection
The whole development is likely to cost in the region of £80million and delivering it will be dependent on securing external investment from the private sector and cultural funding bodies.
Estimates suggest the Cultural Quarter could attract over 850,000 visitors in its first year alone, generate more than £35million of retained local economic activity per year and more than 1,300 jobs.
To help secure external funding, this investment prospectus sets out the vision for the project. This has been developed by the council in partnership with key Swindon cultural organisations and their users and participants, including Swindon Dance, Create Studios, HQ Theatres and Prime Theatre.
