Apply to temporary switch off/on traffic signals

If works are taking place within 100m of any traffic signals, including pedestrian signals, Toucan, Puffin and pelican crossings, it might be necessary for the permanent traffic signals to be switched off temporarily.

If you are unsure whether you require traffic signals switched off,  please contact the team at streetworks@swindon.gov.uk.

A qualified engineer appointed by Swindon Borough Council will carry out the switch off on your behalf. Once payment has been received, the engineer will make contact to arrange this.

This will entitle you to a 15 minute site visit at a time set by a Network Coordinator in the Street Works team.

If operatives are not ready after 15 minutes, the engineer will leave the site at which point a new site visit will need to be arranged and an additional charge will apply. This is also applicable if you fail to attend at the set time.

How long will the application process take?

A minimum of five working days notice is required.

We can process the application in less than five days however, you will need to apply for the application and then email the Network Coordination team at networkcoordination@swindon.gov.uk stating the reference number of the application, and when you will require the service.

If you are applying for this application out of hours, once you have completed the application form, you will need to call 01793 445501 to ask for an emergency traffic signal switch off from our highways out of hours team.

How much will it cost?

  • The fee giving five days period of notice is £425 and is free of VAT
  • The fee for the out of hours service is £525 and is free of VAT

So that we can process your application, you will need to make payment online on submission of the form.
