Duties of drivers of wheelchair accessible vehicles
If a vehicle is designated as wheelchair accessible, the driver must provide the following assistance, where necessary:
- Carry passengers in wheelchairs
- Carry their wheelchair, should a passenger choose to sit in a passenger seat
- Carry their mobility aids
- Take reasonable steps to carry the passenger in safety and reasonable comfort
- Provide reasonable mobility assistance
- Take such steps as are reasonable to assist the passenger to identify and find the vehicle which has been hired
- Not to make, or propose to make, any charge for carrying out the above duties.
Please note: A driver of a designated taxi or designated private hire vehicle commits an offence by failing to comply with a duty imposed on the driver by this section.
Mobility assistance
Providing medical assistance means helping passengers by providing physical help. This could include:
- helping a passenger get in or out of the vehicle, regardless of whether they wish to remain in their wheelchair
- loading a wheelchair in or out of the vehicle
- loading a passenger’s luggage into or out of the vehicle
Medical exemptions
Drivers must carry out the duties listed above unless they are medically unable to do so. If this is so, they can apply for an exemption certificate.
Drivers that have an exemption must display this in their licensed vehicle.
Report a taxi driver
If you believe a taxi or private hire driver has charged you extra for being a wheelchair user, or you have not received reasonable assistance, you can report a taxi driver using our contact licensing form.
