Step 3: Eligibility to join the housing register

The housing allocation policy and priority bands

We are required by law to have a policy to show how we allocate our council housing properties in the Borough of Swindon. We publish our housing allocation policy online for ease of access to our customers.

There are rules in the housing allocation policy that we and all other local authorities must follow however, each local authority has the freedom to shape their policies in line with their own local priorities and needs. As a result, not all local authority allocation policies are the same.

We are committed to allocating council housing in a fair and honest way. We use the housing allocation policy to assess the needs of vulnerable people and those in greatest need of housing.

There is a very high demand for council housing in Swindon, which means currently there is an average waiting time of four years. In Step 2 we have highlighted the importantance of considering other options.
