Pension credit and winter fuel allowance

For people of State Pension age (aged 66 years or older) who receive a low income, financial support may be available.

Pension Credit is worth on average £3,900 per year on top of the state pension and unlocks additional support including:

  • Winter Fuel Payments
  • help with Council Tax
  • help with Housing Benefits if you rent a property
  • NHS dental care
  • a free TV licence for those over 75

For those not already receiving Pension Credit who are worrying about the loss of the Winter Fuel Payment, applications should be made as soon as possible to receive this and all the other help shown.

Awards can be backdated for up to three months and so to qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment, applications would need to be made by 21 December 2024.

Applications should be made to the Department Of Works and Pensions where you can find further details and an application form.

If you know someone else who may be eligible please let them know.
